Persistence of Sadness

Emotions are not material, happiness is not a substance yet levels of chemicals can change with emotion and changing levels of chemicals can affect emotion. It is possible that cycles can be created in which an emotion such as sadness leads to chemical changes which in turn lead to more sadness. It may be that these chemicals persist so that it takes a while for changing beliefs to affect ones mood. In addition one may have many reasons to be unhappy and it takes time to deal with them.  It is wrong to draw the conclusion that if one fails to overcome unhappiness the first time, or even the second time, that one should give up.  When a grey mist is thick it takes a while for the sun to dissipate it and the same applies to self help and sadness.
