Often it may appear to be in one's interest to lie. It has been my experience that people generally find out if someone is lying and the destructive effects of the loss of trust and the hostility and lack of respect created are generally much greater than the benefit of the lie. On the other hand revealing truth may be a mistake as well. People often don't understand the truth and misinterpret it. If there is a good chance that someone will misinterpret information it may be better not to give them that information. That does not mean one should lie to people because one feels that they do not have as deep an understanding as oneself. It may be that one doesn't understand things as well as one thinks one does.
