Part of what makes us happy or unhappy is what we choose to focus our minds on.  One reason people focus on unhappy thoughts, is because of the need to deal with a problem and the need to spend time thinking about it in order to come up with a solution.  It's important in these situations to not simply regurgitate the same depressing thoughts about the problem and to come up with a plan that one intends to carry out and to then to stop dwelling on the problem.

    University of Wisconsin in Madison researchers asked 52 subjects to recall one event that made them happy and one that left them sad or angry.   Those focusing more on bad times suffered weakened immune systems.  So focussing on happy events is better for one's health.
