Trust is essential for successful dating and in relationships.  If one is in a serious relationship and one can't trust one's partner to be loyal the relationship is doomed.  Yet people lie all the time in dating relationships.  Billy Joel wrote a song called Honesty about the prevalence of dishonesty in relationships.  A few of the stanzas are given below:

If you search for tenderness
It isn't hard to find
You can have the love you need to live
But if you look for truthfulness
You might just as well be blind
It always seems to be so hard to give

is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honest is
hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you

I can always find someone
To say they sympathize
If I wear my heart out on my sleeve
But I don't want some pretty face
To tell me party lies
All I want is someone to believe

When one meets someone and wants to date them one of the barriers one may face is getting that person to trust oneself.  This barrier may be created because that person was lied to or mistreated in previous relationships.

Although trust is essential it is also important to realize that your passionate lover of today may be your enemy tomorrow.  Telling them secrets or information that can be used against you may hurt you in the future.   There is a Polish proverb:

The greater love is a mother's; then comes a dog's; then a sweetheart's.

Your mother and your dog are likely to love you all your life but your sweetheart today may hate you tomorrow.

Even trusting a good friend with a secret is dangerous because just as you only told that very good friend that very good friend may only tell their very good friend who only tells their good friend...
