In October 1999, I heard a talk by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach the author of Kosher Sex. During his talk he spoke about differences between men and women and asked us to imagine to men talking and one saying to the other,
"all my life I've waited for this moment when I would commit to one woman and never be able to have sex with another woman again."
To many men and probably to women also, a barrier to committing to someone is that it rules out finding someone else. There is a tradeoff in waiting too long however discussed in the Waitin for My Dearie web page.
Trying to pressure someone into committing to you can backfire. People need to make that decision on their own. On the other hand I read somewhere that ultimatums often have led to marriage proposals.
