For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction is a basic law of physics.  It seems in life this often applies as well.  When we develop drugs to defeat bacteria, bacteria oppose us by developing resistance to those drugs.  When we develop medicines that extend life, people get older and develop more problems until we have no medicines that can keep them alive.  When we spend money on welfare in order to improve the welfare of others we find ourselves funding the production of babies who often become criminals.  There is a saying that an idle mind is the playground of the devil and when we give welfare the recipients have less incentive to find a job and while they are idle they often turn to crime.  When countries go to war to eliminate the enemy if they don't win decisively they often antagonize the enemy even more and wind up with a bigger enemy.
