Islam's Contribution To Civilization

the round persuasion does not believe in God and should be punished.

has particularly critiqued claims of a medieval "Islamic Golden Age" in areas
such as the arts. This is like saying a group of savages storming into the
world's largest libraries, murdering all the librarians and then claimed to have
written all the books there, gives credit to this myth. Islam's
much-vaunted 'Golden Age' was in fact just the twilight of conquered pre-Islamic

William Eaton, the American consul to Tunis when John Adams was president had this to say about the effect of Islam on the Barbary states.
Considered as a nation, they are deplorably wretched, because they have no property in the soil to inspire an ambition to cultivate it. They are abject slaves to the despotism of their government, and they are humiliated by tyranny, the worst of all tyrannies, the despotism of priestcraft. They live in more solemn fear of the frowns of a bigot who has been dead and rotten above a thousand years, than of the living despot whose frown would cost them their lives…The ignorance, superstitious tradition and civil and religious tyranny, which depress the human mind here, exclude improvement of every kind…
Mehdi Hasan made a speech at the Oxford Union in which he argued that Islam is a peaceful religion. One of Hasan's arguments was that there would have been no Renaissance or Reformation (he probably means Enlightenment) in Europe without the role of the Muslim philosophers Avicenna (Ibn Sina) and Averroes (Ibn Rushd). Robert Spencer in an article about his speech responded:
Very well; then why wasn't there a Renaissance or Enlightenment in Muslim countries with Avicenna and Averroes? Because they were condemned as heretics, and philosophical exploration withered in the Islamic world. Al-Ghazali in The Incoherence of the Philosophers argued that the philosophers were heretics who should be put to death. Averroes countered with The Incoherence of the Incoherence, but the damage was done, and it was left to the West to figure out what to do with the algorithms and philosophical discoveries of which Hasan is so proud, while Muslims largely ignored or condemned them. Hasan doesn't touch on that rather obvious fact.
Peter Hammond in his book Slavery Terrorism and Islam writes how Muslim hordes destroyed libraries. Mark Humphries has a good web page about Islamic destruction of libraries and culture.
Here is a video in which Robert Spencer addresses the myths of Islamic contributions to civilization.
Apologists argue that Muslims are segregated and on welfare because they are discriminated against, and not given jobs. An undercover reporter for the Sunday Times learned that in the Savior Sect of Islam
Integration with British society is scorned, as is any form of democratic process. Followers are encouraged to exploit the benefits system. They avoid jobs which could bring them into contact with western women or might lead them to contribute to the economy of a nation they are taught to despise...
A member by the name of Nasser told the reporter that (Undercover in the Academy of Hatred, Timesonline.co.uk | August 8, 2005):
It was important to be unemployed, as taking a job would contribute to the kuffar system.
Nasser said he was receiving a jobseeker’s allowance and justified this by saying the prophet Muhammad also lived off the state and attacked it at the same time. “All money belongs to Allah anyway,” he said.
Islamic schools in the West import Islamic hate. The London Evening Standard reported on 07.02.07 a former teacher of the Saudi owned and funded King Fahd Academy in Acton, England, Colin Cook, alleged that children as young as five are taught from racist materials. The principal, Dr Sumaya Alyusuf, admitted that they used those books but insisted that the racist sections were being misinterpreted and that the school doesn't teach hatred of Christianity or Judaism and that they would continue to use those books.
Extremist literature is being stocked in public libraries at taxpayer expense in England most likely as a result of the request of the increasing population of extremist Muslims in the country (Daily Mail 9/6/07).
Apologists for Islam point to the golden age of Islam when supposedly Islam lived peacefully together with other religions. Andrew Bostom in an article titled (The Sacred Muslim Practice of Beheading, frontpagemag.com 5/13/04) wrote about Islamic attitudes during this golden age. He wrote:
The classical Muslim jurist al-Mawardi (a Shafiite jurist, d. 1058) from Baghdad was a seminal, prolific scholar who lived during the so-called Islamic "Golden Age" of the Abbasid-Baghdadian Caliphate. He wrote the following, based on widely accepted interpretations of the Qur'an and Sunna (i.e., the recorded words and deeds of Muhammad),regarding infidel prisoners of Jihad campaigns:
As for the captives, the amir [ruler] has the choice of taking the most beneficial action of four possibilities: the first to put them to death by cutting their necks; the second, to enslave them and apply the laws of slavery regarding their sale and manumission; the third, to ransom them in exchange for goods or prisoners; and fourth, to show favor to them and pardon them. Allah, may he be exalted, says, 'When you encounter those [infidels] who deny [the Truth=Islam] then strike [their] necks' (Qur'an sura 47, verse 4)....Abul-Hasan al-Mawardi, al-Ahkam as-Sultaniyyah." During the period of enlightened Muslim rule, the Christians of Iberian Toledo, who had first submitted to their Arab Muslim invaders in 711 or 712, revolted in 713. In the harsh Muslim reprisal that ensued,
was pillaged, and all the Christian notables had their throats cut. On the Indian subcontinent, Babur (1483-1530), the founder of the Mughal Empire, who is revered as a paragon of Muslim tolerance by modern revisionist historians, recorded the following in his autobiographical Baburnama, about infidel prisoners of a Jihad campaign: Toledo
"Those who were brought in alive [having surrendered] were ordered beheaded, after which a tower of skulls was erected in the camp." [The Baburnama -Memoirs of Babur, Prince and Emperor, translated and edited by Wheeler M. Thacktson, Oxford University Press,1996, p. 188. Emphasis added.]
Serge Trifkovic in his book the Sword of the Prophet in a section called "Myth of a "Golden Age" wrote that:
Whatever flourished, it was not by reason of Islam, it was in spite of Islam. ...The periods of civilization under Islam, however brief, were predicated on the readiness of the conquerors to borrow from earlier cultures, to compile translate, learn, and absorb. Islam per se never encouraged science, meaning "disinterested inquiry," because the only knowledge it accepts is religious knowledge...
It is said that when the Caliph Umar conquered Alexandria in the seventh century, he had its huge library burned, saying that if the writings contained within were in agreement with the Kuran, then they were redundant and therefore useless; if they disagreed with the holy book of the Muslims, then they were blasphemous and must be burned. ..
Like all totalitarian ideologies, Islam has an inherent tendency to the closing of the mind.
Saudi Arabia is one example of an Islamic country that closes the mind. According to Trifkovic:
The government censors all forms of public artistic expression and prohibits cinemas and public musical or theatrical performances, except those that are considered folkloric. The authorities prohibit the study of evolution, Freud, Marx, Western philosophy. Informers monitor lectures and report to government and religious authorities.
